Most guidelines recommend boosters at 3-yearly intervals after a basic vaccination including primary vaccination and revaccination one year later. After primary vaccination followed by revaccination one year later with a vaccine formulated at minimum dose, the cats were kept in a confined environment and challenged 3 years later with a virulent heterologous strain of feline calicivirus FCV and subsequently a virulent strain of feline herpesvirus FHV.

Clinical signs and viral excretion were recorded for two weeks after each viral inoculation. Contemporary unvaccinated cats and new animals added at the time of challenge were used as controls. The vaccination regimen induced a stable and long-lasting humoral response. Vaccination resulted in a significant reduction in the severity of the disease after FHV challenge and in the frequency of cats showing a severe calicivirosis defined as a combination of systemic clinical symptoms and oronasal ulcers.

As opposed to the significant reduction of excretion observed a few weeks after primo-vaccination or even one year after vaccination for FCV, viral shedding was not reduced 3 years after revaccination. The results and conclusion of this study are consistent with current vaccination guidelines and will allow the veterinarian to adapt the vaccination regimen to the way of life of the cat.

The family of PUREVAX vaccines induce an effective immune response without the use of adjuvants that can present potential risks to cats.

An adjuvant is a substance that is added to a vaccine to enhance the body's immune response to the vaccine. Adjuvants have been associated with injection site reaction, injection site granuloma, and chronic inflammation in cats. In: Greene CE, ed. Infectious Diseases of the Dog and Cat. Purevax RCPCh is available as a lyophilisate freeze-dried pellet and solvent that are made up into a suspension for injection. Purevax RCPCh is used to vaccinate cats from the age of 8 weeks against the following diseases:.

The vaccine helps to reduce the symptoms of the diseases. It also helps to reduce viral excretion in case of calicivirus infection for one year after vaccination.

It can also prevent death due to panleucopenia. The vaccine is given as two doses injected under the skin. The first injection should be given in kittens aged at least eight weeks, with a second injection three to four weeks later.

If the kitten has high levels of antibodies received from the mother in the womb and in the milk, the first vaccination should be delayed until 12 weeks of age. The cat should be revaccinated for all components one year after the first vaccination course, then every year for chlamydiosis, and every three years for rhinotracheitis, calicivirosis and panleucopenia.

Purevax RCPCh is a vaccine. Purevax RCPCh contains small amounts of weakened or killed viruses and bacteria that cause feline rhinotracheitis, calicivirosis, chlamydiosis and panleucopenia.

In the future, the immune system will be able to produce antibodies more quickly when it is again exposed to the viruses or bacteria.

The antibodies will help to protect against the diseases caused by these viruses or bacteria. When exposed to any of these viruses later in life, the cat will either not become infected or have a much less serious infection.

The effectiveness of Purevax RCPCh has been studied in several trials in laboratory conditions where cats were vaccinated and infected with herpesvirus, calicivirus, C. In the field, the studies of Purevax RCPCh looked at the basic vaccination schedule 2 injections 3—4 weeks apart and at the booster vaccination. They included young and adult cats of various breeds, but not young kittens. The main measure of effectiveness was the level of antibodies in the blood against the viruses and bacteria in the vaccine.

In laboratory conditions Purevax RCPCh was demonstrated to provide protection against the diseases listed above. In the field study of basic vaccination there was an increase in antibodies against feline rhinotracheitis herpesvirus, calicivirus infection, and feline panleucopenia viruses. It was not possible to detect a rise in antibodies against C. In the study looking at booster vaccination, antibody levels against rhinotracheitis herpesvirus, calicivirus infection, feline panleucopenia and C.
